A Flight of Fancy is set in the Regency period of England in 1812 and is the second in The Daughters of Bainbridge House historical romance series. Considering this novel involves a heroine who is interested in ballooning in the early days of those flights, how can you ignore this hook? Her head is in the clouds. His feet are planted firmly on the ground. Can love cover the distance?

I believe I’ve read four of Laurie Alice Eakes’s novels and none disappointed. It’s obvious the author has a tremendous knowledge of history and a way with description. I even found myself reading with a British accent. 

If I’d been more attentive when I ordered this novel, I would have realized I’ve had Book One waiting on my Kindle for a while and would have read it first. Evidently, the main characters met then, because there are references to incidents that happen in the first book. A Necessary Deception centers around Cassandra’s older sister, and even though it would be better to read them in order, it doesn’t hinder an understanding or enjoyment of A Flight of Fancy. Ms. Eakes has set up the foundation for Book Three to involve the youngest Bainbridge, Honore. Considering Honore’s penchant for errors in judgment, that ought to be an interesting tale.

Cassandra Bainbridge is a rebel of sorts, a bluestocking, doing what she can to flout her demanding father. Geoffrey Giles is a reluctant earl who is known for being the good son. When they’re together, their passions ignite and tragedy ensues. It sparks guilt on his part and a sense of God’s punishment on hers. While Whittaker refuses to give up on their relationship, Cassandra fights him at every turn.

The characters appeal. The plot engages. The balloon flight entertains. The twists surprise.

Yes, I’d definitely recommend you make time for A Flight of Fancy.
